Blair Bursey nominated for provincial sports award
Awards to be announced April 8 in St. John’s
Blair Bursey of Gander is in the running for a provincial sports award.
He has been nominated for the Ferd Hayward Memorial Award for Senior Male Athlete of the Year.
Bursey is a member of the Gander Golf Club and the Utah Valley University Golf Team. During the 2016 season he accumulated 17,750 points on the Golf Newfoundland Labrador’s Order of Merit to be named the Male Amateur Golfer of the Year.
In 2016, Bursey won the Provincial Men’s Amateur Championship for the second consecutive year and after leading for the first three days at the Canadian National Amateur Championships, finished the competition tied for fifth place.
Bursey was also the captain of Team NL that won the 2016 National Willingdon Cup Interprovincial Team Championship.
That team is up for the Edward P. Browne Memorial Award for Team of the Year.
Bursey, Nathan Peters of Clovelly and Mid-Amateur and Senior Champion Chuck Conley of Bally Haly Country Club recorded a two day total of 281 to take the gold medal with a two stroke win over Team Ontario in the Inter-provincial team competition at the 2016 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championships in Gatineau Quebec.
Through 2016, Blair teed off in 18 competitions, including 12 university events, three state and three provincial/national competitions.
From those 18 events, he won two championships including the Bandon Dunes NCAA Championship, Individual Medalist Honors, placed in the top five at seven events and finished in the top 10 on 11 occasions.
Other finalists for the athlete of the year award are Sean Cleary (softball) and Patrick Parfrey (rugby).
Another Central Newfoundland resident has also been nominated for an award.
Baseball player Dave Janes of Grand Falls-Windsor is up for the Graham Snow Memorial Award Executive of the Year Award. Janes was nominated for his work in building and developing minor baseball in his hometown.
hn Cowan (rugby) and Paul F. Smith (softball) are the other finalists for the award.
The awards will be presented during the Stars and Legends Awards Gala on April 8 in St. John’s.
