Little story doing big numbers in New York
Come From Away earns over $1 million in a week
It seems like “Come From Away” has people coming in droves to the box office as ticket sales for the musical keep climbing.
A report in Playbill magazines shows the production earned just over $1 million for the week ending April 16.
The big numbers at the box office have placed the production amongst the ranks of Broadway’s million-dollar club. There are currently 40 productions on Broadway, with 15 making the million-dollar mark in the week ending April 16 according to The Broadway League (TBL), the national trade association for the Broadway industry.
The musical recounts the stories of Gander residents and other local volunteers who opened their homes to airline passengers after the destruction of the twin towers during the 9/11 attacks. North American airspace was closed to commercial flights almost immediately after the attack began, grounding all flights. Those already in the air, forced to divert from their destination to the closest airport, for 38 planes, this was Gander International Airport.
“I think why people are going to it, it’s the story,” said Gander Mayor Claude Elliott. “People I talked to in New York said the story is phenomenal ... it will probably make another few million.”
The production company flew Elliott and other dignitaries to the Broadway premier of the show. Opening night also had a few other high-profile attendees, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, wife Sophie and daughter of U.S. President Donald Trump, Ivanka, also in attendance.
The production is entering its ninth week on Broadway and so far has grossed $7,063,336 during its run, significant numbers for a production that cost $12 million to create according to TBL.
Elliott hopes the publicity garnered by the show will translate into a boon for the local economy.
“We haven’t since anything yet, it’s still a little early in the year,” said Elliott. “I suspect once June month rolls around and after Labour Day weekend that we’re going to see quite a few tourists and visitors because of this play.”
