Come From Away earns over $1 mil­lion in a week

It seems like “Come From Away” has peo­ple com­ing in droves to the box of­fice as ticket sales for the mu­si­cal keep climb­ing.

A re­port in Play­bill mag­a­zines shows the pro­duc­tion earned just over $1 mil­lion for the week end­ing April 16.

The big numbers at the box of­fice have placed the pro­duc­tion amongst the ranks of Broad­way’s mil­lion-dol­lar club. There are cur­rently 40 pro­duc­tions on Broad­way, with 15 mak­ing the mil­lion-dol­lar mark in the week end­ing April 16 ac­cord­ing to The Broad­way League (TBL), the na­tional trade as­so­ci­a­tion for the Broad­way in­dus­try.

The mu­si­cal re­counts the sto­ries of Gander res­i­dents and other lo­cal vol­un­teers who opened their homes to air­line pas­sen­gers af­ter the de­struc­tion of the twin tow­ers dur­ing the 9/11 at­tacks. North Amer­i­can airspace was closed to com­mer­cial flights al­most im­me­di­ately af­ter the at­tack be­gan, ground­ing all flights. Those al­ready in the air, forced to di­vert from their des­ti­na­tion to the clos­est air­port, for 38 planes, this was Gander In­ter­na­tional Air­port.

“I think why peo­ple are go­ing to it, it’s the story,” said Gander Mayor Claude El­liott. “Peo­ple I talked to in New York said the story is phe­nom­e­nal ... it will prob­a­bly make an­other few mil­lion.”

The pro­duc­tion com­pany flew El­liott and other dig­ni­taries to the Broad­way pre­mier of the show. Open­ing night also had a few other high-pro­file at­ten­dees, in­clud­ing Prime Min­is­ter Justin Trudeau, wife So­phie and daugh­ter of U.S. Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump, Ivanka, also in at­ten­dance.

The pro­duc­tion is en­ter­ing its ninth week on Broad­way and so far has grossed $7,063,336 dur­ing its run, sig­nif­i­cant numbers for a pro­duc­tion that cost $12 mil­lion to cre­ate ac­cord­ing to TBL.

El­liott hopes the pub­lic­ity gar­nered by the show will trans­late into a boon for the lo­cal econ­omy.

“We haven’t since any­thing yet, it’s still a lit­tle early in the year,” said El­liott. “I sus­pect once June month rolls around and af­ter Labour Day week­end that we’re go­ing to see quite a few tourists and vis­i­tors be­cause of this play.”
