FOGO ISLAND, NL – Both the federal and provincial governments have announced funding to help facilitate economic growth on Fogo Island, sharing the news via press release.
Scott Simms, MP for Coast of Bays-Central-Notre Dame, announced the Atlantic Opportunities Agency (ACOA) would be investing nearly $324,000 into the island.
“The Government of Canada is working with community and business partners to capitalize on opportunities in tourism and the fishery to create new employment and economic growth,” said Simms.
Furthermore, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (TCII) also promised a contribution of $100,000 for projects.
With these investments, the Town of Fogo Island is planning to upgrade and expand its network of hiking trails.
The Fogo Island Co-operative Society Limited is planning to use its share of the money to develop international markets for sea cucumber in an attempt to diversify the fishery.
Derrick Bragg, MHA for Fogo Island-Cape Freels, said he was pleased by the intergovernmental cooperation.
“These investments in Fogo Island are an excellent example of what can be achieved when our federal and provincial governments work together,” said Bragg. “I am looking forward to the upgraded network of trails, and the business development that will take place at the Fogo Island Co-operative Society Limited.”
