Future of cod fishery conference planned for Gander
GANDER, NL – A two-day conference on the future of province’s cod fishery will be held in Gander next month.
Set to take place on Nov. 28 and 29, the conference will lay out the latest information in creating a sustainable, competitive fishery for the future.
Offered by the Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation (CCFI), the event will bring together recognized international experts to present information to help prepare the industry for changes in resources off our coasts.
According to CCFI chair Alastair O’Rielly, the conference “should enable participants to reflect upon the presentations, discuss the implications with others in the industry, and develop options for the future fishery.”
CCFI expects to hold a follow-up conference where these approaches can be discussed. The ultimate aim of the undertaking is to create consensus on a future plan for a sustainable, viable fishery.
Organizers hope the conference will attract younger people in the industry, as they will be the principal players in the new fishery when it develops.More information on the conference and registration is available at www.ccfi.ca.
