Liven up the garden while supporting a good cause.

Family Services Perth-Huron’s autumn crocus sale has returned, raising money for its visiting hospice volunteer program.

Bulbs are available at Cozyn’s Garden Gallery in Stratford and Klomp’s Home and Garden in St. Pauls Station for $4 each or four for $15. The flower and its colours are fitting for a hospice fundraiser.

“This bright mauve perennial adds a burst of colour just as many other flowers in your garden are dying, symbolic of the care and support provided by hospice volunteers at end of life,” Family Services hospice co-ordinator Dianne Parr said in a press release.

Executive director Susan Melkert said the crocus is a unique flower based on its timing.

“Most flowers come in the spring,” Melkert said Friday. “It’s a symbol of hope and renewal.”

Melkert said the fundraiser has been around for about 20 years and generally raises between $400 and $800.

“While the funds raised are modest, the importance of sharing the information for the community that services are available for vis- iting hospice care is most important,” she said.

Cozyn’s store manager Brenda Campbell said they received about 80 bulbs Wednesday and were down to about 30 as of Friday. The sale ends in mid-September.

The visiting hospice program is free and provides compassionate support for individuals and their families who are at end-of-life and require palliative care. Its volunteers offer companionship, emotional support and respite care in patients’ homes.

The organization also offers bereavement support for family members. It mainly serves southern Perth County.
