Huskies second at MDHS tourney
Stratford Northwestern finished second at this past weekend’s Mitchell senior girls basketball Early Bird tournament.
The Huskies got off to a great start with a 47-21 win over North Middlesex. In a battle of HuronPerth favourites, Northwestern defeated St. Mike’s 38-30.
The Huskies battled defending tournament champion Eden St. Catharines in the final but lost 40-30.
Northwestern was within two baskets until late in the fourth quarter as the young squad played great defence over three games and shared the ball well on offence as several players hit the scoresheet.
Tatum James, Morgan Goffar, Paige Goffar and Sophia Hawkins were Northwestern’s top players.
Eight teams participated in the tournament, including Mitchell, St. Marys, Kincardine, Woodstock Collegiate and North Middlesex. St. Mike’s took bronze.
Before losing to Northwestern, the Warriors defeated Kincardine 60-23. St. Mike’s finished third with a 50-26 win over Mitchell.
Mitchell defeated Woodstock Collegiate in its first game but lost to Eden and placed fourth.
Kincardine won the consolation final after beating St. Marys, which lost to Eden and beat Woodstock.
St. Mike’s will participate in the annual 32-team tournament at Western University this weekend, while the Mitchell Blue Devils will compete in the annual Woodstock Collegiate tournament this weekend.
After winning both games this past weekend, the Stratford Warriors practised Monday night in advance of their home opener Friday against Brampton. A season preview looking at the Warriors and the rest of the Midwestern Conference teams will be published in Wednesday’s Beacon Herald.
