A much better option
Regarding the Point of View Carbon tax could have populist punch (July 9)
Mark Cameron of Canadians for Clean Prosperity has done his conservative colleagues a huge favour by pointing out an option much better than axing carbon taxes, a way forward that is eminently conservative, even populist. He has thrown the ball into the hands of Doug Ford, Jason Kenney and Andrew Scheer. Will they remain stuck in their ideologically based “ax the tax” mantra? Or will they open their eyes and see the immense political possibilities inherent in a carbon fee and dividend system?
Almost all economists believe carbon pricing is the most efficient way to achieve emissions reductions. So price carbon at source, collect the tax, divide it up and give it back to the people; all of it, in a fair, transparent and visible way, so as to minimize impact on citizens. Nobody likes taxes, but my bet is that dividend cheques would be really popular!
