Third annual Active Living Fair set for Nov. 15

Event will also include tours of the association’s new facility

Stratford’s annual Active Living Fair is back next Thursday with more speakers and more vendors than ever before.

In its first two years, the Alzheimer Society of Perth County and Stratford Lakeside Active Adults Association’s yearly event has served to connect seniors in Stratford and Perth County with information and resources available in their communities.

“Typically, the folks that come to this are already active and connected in their community, so it’s really just trying to let people know about some of the services that are available because it may not necessarily be for them, it might their friends or their neighbours that needs some additional support,” said Sheri Gilhula, first link support and education co-ordinator with the local Alzheimer Society.

As the event’s previous venue, the Kiwanis Community Centre, has been torn down to make way for the Stratford Festival’s new Tom Patterson Theatre, this year’s fair will be held at the active adults association’s new home in the Burnside Agriplex.

Running from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will include vendors from 21 community organizations that serve seniors aged 55 and over.

Throughout the day, those in attendance will have the opportunity to listen to five presentations: the Alzheimer Society’s Bodies and Minds in Motion and Finding Your Way programs, an interactive Moovin’ and Groovin’ session with local lifestyle and fitness guru Grant Hernden, the art of planned giving, and the link between hearing loss and dementia.

“In the past, we’ve focused on diet. This year we’re focusing on hearing because we do know there’s an impact on the brain as well, which can increase the risk of dementia if our hearing is not being taken care of,” Gilhula said.

The fair will also include tours of the active adults association’s new facility, as well as the option to purchase lunch for $5. There is no preregistration required for the event, which is being held completely free of charge.

Refreshments and door prizes donated by vendors will also be available.
