Fall the perfect time for recycling
Three events to help residents declutter, dispose properly
September will be a good time to make some room in your house or apartment with three recycling/ disposal events taking place in Antigonish.
This Friday and Saturday (Sept. 14 and 15), the Town of Antigonish is hosting Care 2 Share, a two-day campaign where residents can leave unwanted — but perfectly usable — items at their curb with a sign, so other residents can take what they want.
“Reusing items instead of discarding them reduces landfill costs, and is a great way to both de-clutter and to find some great treasures of your own,” promotional material from the Eastern Regional Solid Waste Management (ERSWM) website (erswm.ca) states, while also noting it will take place “rain or shine.”
Items can start to be put out on Friday, no earlier than 7 a.m., and, if not taken, must be removed from the curb by dusk on Saturday. They must be clearly marked ‘free’ and an example list of items is part of the ERSWM website notice.
The suggestion for items not claimed is to consider donating them to charitable organizations.
Next up is another holding of the popular bulky item pickup activity.
Taking place during Sept. 17, 18 and 19 (corresponding to your regular garbage pickup day), bulky waste collection is a “special event for residents within the Town of Antigonish who currently receive collection under the town’s waste management collection program.
“This collection is an opportunity to dispose of unwanted items that do not fit in a regular garbage bag.”
It’s noted that items should be placed on the curb no earlier than 9 p.m. on the night previous to your regular collection day and no later than 7:30 a.m. on the morning of that day.
Also important to note; doors must be removed from fridges and freezers, appliances and all other items must be free from regular garbage, carpet and underlay must be no longer than 5 feet rolled and tied, and broken glass must be safely packaged.
A list of “acceptable items” and “items that will not be collected” is found on the ERSWM website. A “waste hotline” — 902-863-4949 — is also provided for those requiring further information.
The final activity of the smart recycling/disposal trio goes the following weekend (Sept. 21 and 22) where there will be a chance for Antigonish residents — town and county — to properly dispose of household hazardous waste.
Set-up in the Antigonish Market Square parking lot, at 133 Church St., the drop-off opportunity will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
A definition of household hazardous waste accompanies material promoting the event.
“Household hazardous waste is leftover or unwanted household products that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients. Proper disposal protects both us and the environment.”
A large list of examples is on the website and folks are encouraged to call the aforementioned town’s waste hotline, the Municipality of the County of Antigonish at 902-863-1117 or ERSWM at 902-870-2817, for more information.
A broken office chair is a good example of an item which could be left out on the curb during bulky waste collection in the Town of Antigonish, Sept. 17 to 19.
