Stitched from the Heart; it’s a clever name for a quilt show … and very appropriate for the one coming up in Antigonish.

The Highland Quilt Guild of Antigonish is hosting its bi-annual quilt show, Sept. 21 and 22, at 75 St. Ninian Street; home to the Antigonish CACL and Royal Canadian Legion Arras Branch 59, which was recently named the East Coast Credit Union Social Enterprise Centre.

The location is a late replacement for St. James United Church.

Show time Friday goes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., while on Saturday it’s 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Guild program committee member Andrea Boyd-white and executive co-chair Linda Kell noted this will be the group’s fourteenth show.

Kell said it’s a great opportunity for members to display their work while, perhaps, encouraging others to try the activity.

Boyd-white said they saw a lot of people, during the last two shows at the church on Main Street, who just happened to notice it was going on and dropped in.

“And we hear it from a lot of people, ‘oh, I would love to do that,’” she said. “It may not be immediately but, down the road when they retire and have some time on their hands, [they’ll try quilting].”

As for what is new, Boyd-white said this year is the first for a ‘featured quilter.’

“The featured quilter this year is Carolyn Hudson; she is a well-known and very prolific quilter,” Boyd-white said.

“She has entered and won local, provincial, national and, even, international contests. She is showing between 15 to 20 quilts that are retrospective of her journey in quilting.”

The show will include vendors Mira Stitch’n Post (Friday and Saturday), Mom’s Quiltique (Friday) and Allie Cameron (Saturday), as well as small handmade items for sale and a silent auction.

Admission is $5.

Large project

The guild is pleased to do a large community project each year and this year they focused on quilts to be donated to the Jordon Myles Foundation for the mental health unit at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital.

“I think we’re going to end up with 20 to 25 quilts to donate to them,” Boyd-white said, adding the group really enjoys being able to contribute to community causes through their passion for quilting.

“And mental health is such an important one,” she added.
