Fu­neral ser­vice for the late Mary Agnes Grant, 88, James River, was held Septem­ber 3 in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph’s, Antigo­nish County, with Fa­ther Lazarus Guria of­fi­ci­at­ing. Burial was in the parish ceme­tery.

Mrs. Grant died Au­gust 26, 2018, in R.K. Macdon­ald Nurs­ing Home.

Read­ers at the fu­neral Mass were Pa­tri­cia Lam­bert, Janet Grant and Heather Macdon­ald. Craig and Tris­tan Grant pre­sented the of­fer­tory gifts. Mu­sic was pro­vided by Mar­garet Macgre­gor Macdon­ald, fiddler John Pel­lerin and bag­piper Scott Wil­liams.

Pall­bear­ers were Michael Ben­nett, Johnathan Gil­lis, Erin Atkin­son, Stephanie Selinger, Craig Grant and Tris­tan Grant.

Born Oc­to­ber 28, 1929, in Antigo­nish, she was raised by her grand­par­ents, the late An­gus and Agnes Macmil­lan, Hawthorne Street. She at­tended school at Mount St. Bernard, where she demon­strated a tal­ent for the craft of pot­tery. As a young woman, she worked at Leo’s Corner Store in Antigo­nish. She mar­ried Harold Grant on Novem­ber 21, 1955 and set­tled in James River in a home he built for her, where they raised their five chil­dren. She de­voted her life to be­ing a wife and mother. She en­joyed rock­ing and singing to her chil­dren and grand­chil­dren in her wooden rock­ing chair, bak­ing cin­na­mon rolls, bis­cuits, mar­ble cakes, ground­beef casse­role and Christmas potato dress­ing, each made from her own special recipe. She loved to play pranks and was al­ways open to lend­ing a help­ing hand. In ear­lier years, she was an ac­tive vol­un­teer for the St. Joseph’s CWL, work­ing at church pic­nics. Later in life, she en­joyed bingo nights with her hus­band and their bingo friends. She looked for­ward to as­sist­ing her hus­band with his an­nual har­vest of their Christmas trees.

She is sur­vived by two sons, Hec­tor (Deb­bie), Cloverville; Les­lie (Janet) Grant, Char­lot­te­town, Prince Edward Is­land; Heather Macdon­ald, Cal­gary, Al­berta; Margie (Billy) Gil­lis, Fort Mc­mur­ray, Alta.; 17 grand­chil­dren, Craig, Tris­tan and Bren­dan Grant; Mary Pa­tri­cia (Aaron) Lam­bert, Rus­sell P. (Jodie) Macdon­ald, Stephanie (Shane) Selinger, Erin (Aaron) Atkin­son, Maranda (Alex) Key, Mag­gie Grant (Nick), Michael (Jenn) Ben­nett, Christo­pher Ben­nett, Court­ney (Cory) Mac­sween, Kylie and Johnathan Gil­lis, Ryan Baker, Sara and Devin Hart­man; 17 great-grand­chil­dren.

She was pre­de­ceased by her hus­band of 54 years, Harold; daugh­ter, He­len Grant-baker; grand­par­ents, An­gus and Agnes Macmil­lan; par­ents-in-law, Les­lie and Mar­garet Grant; close aunts and un­cles.
