Most of the specifics were in place, for plans to establish a new massage practice in Antigonish, when the members of Antigonish Town Council gathered at noon, Oct. 23, for a special meeting.

The ensuing vote was a quick matter, with council promptly and unanimously showing unanimous support for a development proposal for the practice. The new practice will be located in the basement of a residential property at 62 The Heights until the owner can find a more suitable location in downtown Antigonish.

Information released by the Town of Antigonish states, "the tenant plans to operate their business from that location for up to 24 months until an appropriate commercial space in downtown becomes available. During the operation of the practice from 62 The Heights, there will be no increase in the capacity of the business and only one person may be hired for administrative assistance."

After the agreement went through first reading at council’s regular monthly meeting, Oct. 15, Antigonish Mayor Laurie Boucher said, "we want to stress that this is a temporary situation, and the practitioner wants to be on Main Street. There’s nothing adequately available right now."

Council approved a second reading and unanimously voted in favour of the proposal. Council previously reviewed the proposal at their Oct. 15 meeting, and drafted up a series of recommendations prior to the Oct. 23 meeting.

Planning staff, at the previous meeting recommended that council enter into the agreement with the owners of the property at The Heights.

Council’s recommendations include three main stipulations

• Hours of operation are limited to the hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

• Two clearly marked parking spaces are allowed for the practice.

• Any sounds, music or scents originating from the practice that could bother neighbours are forbidden.

The original development permit request was issued in mid-august, filed by the owners of the property at The Heights.
