Nicholas going to Japan
Breanne Nicholas of Blenheim has been named to the Team Canada roster for the Kitakyushu Sevens, the fourth leg on the HSBC World Rugby Women’s Seven Series. Canada will play pool games Friday against England, Spain and the United States at the first women’s series event in Japan. “Japan is a beautiful country but we are on the ground for such a short time so we will be focused on performing well and improving again,” Canada’s head coach John Tait said in a news release. “The team has been sharp, working hard on and off the field and are keen to challenge for the gold in Japan.” Canada is in third place in the series standings. New Zealand is first and Australia is second. Canada placed sixth in the series opener in Dubai in December, then won gold in Sydney in February and bronze in Las Vegas in March. Nicholas has been on Team Canada for each series event. She’s seventh in team scoring with 23 points. She’s scored three tries and made four conversions. The final two legs on the series will be May 27-28 in Victoria, B.C., and June 24-25 in Clermont-Ferrand, France. Nicholas also won gold with Canada’s Maple Leafs in the women’s elite division at the Vancouver Rugby Festival in March.
