The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has found itself in an exclusive club for its efforts concerning organ donation.

The hospital is one of eight in the province, out of 69 facilities, that attained a 100 per cent routine notification rate, according to the Trillium Gift of Life Network.

Routine notification is the rate at which hospitals notify the network when there is the potential for organ or tissue donations.

Between April 1 and June 30, Ontario hospitals achieved a 95 per cent notification rate.

“We’re really proud of it,” said Lisa Northcott, CKHA’s vice-president, chief nursing executive, and chief professional practice. “We’ve done a lot of work with our staff to understand the importance . . . Our staff are really committed to it.”

She added this wasn’t the first time the CKHA has achieved that rate.

Other hospitals with the perfect notification rate are Collingwood General & Marine Hospital, Grey Bruce Health Services, Kirkland and District Hospital, Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare, Pembroke Regional Hospital, St. Joseph’s General Hospital Elliot Lake, and University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Northcott said the Trillium Gift of Life Network has outlined criteria for when it should be notified of a death in the hospital.

“Trillium Gift of Life actually makes the connection with the family,” she said. “They ask them if they would like to consider donation. The research shows there is much greater success, much greater approval for donations, if they’re contacted by Trillium Gift of Life.”

During the same reporting period, Ontario hospitals achieved a 59 per cent conversion rate.

This is the percentage of potential organs donors that went on to become actual organ donors. Nineteen out of 55 hospitals achieved a 100 per cent conversion rate.

Several southwestern Ontario hospitals are on this list, including Cambridge Memorial Hospital, Grand River Hospital, St. Marys General Hospital, St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, and Windsor Regional Hospital.

“I think people are becoming much more aware (of organ donation),” Northcott said. “And people are talking about it more with their family members.”

She also credited the work of first responders for their ongoing educational campaigns about the issue.
