Patton rejoins Maroons

Second-year goalie eager to play again after watching in OHL

The Chatham Maroons can offer Lucas Patton the playing time that the Windsor Spitfires couldn’t.

The second-year netminder rejoined the Maroons on Tuesday after being the Spitfires’ thirdstringer all season.

“I’ve got to get playing, right?” Patton said. “Got to get games in. It’s good to be back. I’m eager to start playing.”

The 18-year-old from Toronto was 16-5 with a 3.56 goals-against average and .902 save percentage for the Maroons as a rookie last season.

He was twice selected as the goalie of the month in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Western Conference.

Patton dressed for some OHL pre-season games with the Spitfires, but he hasn’t seen any action in the regular season.

“I’m happy to get back and practising and get in a couple games and get back in the swing of things,” he said after practising Tuesday at Chatham Memorial Arena. “I’m still practising with Windsor, which is good. I’m practising every day. It’s good to be back, for sure.”

To make room for Patton, the Maroons released goalie Kyle Droge after Tuesday’s practice.

Droge was 0-1-0 with a 5.57 GAA and .841 save percentage in three games. He hadn’t played since Sept. 27.

Those moves still leave the Maroons with three goaltenders. Ryan Wagner and recently acquired John Massara are the others.

Wagner has seen most of the action with a 9-8-0 record, 3.56 GAA and .899 save percentage. Massara made his first start Sunday and stopped 35 shots in a 3-1 win over the first-place Leamington Flyers.

“I don’t know how many guys they can carry,” Patton said. “I’m just focused on me right now. Whatever they decide, it’s their decision. They’re the staff and you’ve got to respect whatever they say.”

He walked into a locker-room that’s undergone a makeover since he left last season.

“A lot of different faces,” Patton said. “Some old ones that I recognize. It’s good to get to know the new guys and get rolling.”

The Maroons don’t play until Sunday when the Sarnia Legionnaires visit Memorial Arena.

Patton doesn’t know when he’ll start, but he vows to be ready. He’s confident his practices have kept him sharp.

“I’ve been working hard in Windsor and coming here to work hard in these practices,” he said. “I think I’m ready to go.” mmalone@post
