Owners stepping back after decade at helm
Pita Pit will reopen under new ownership in early 2019
The owners of Chatham’s only Pita Pit franchise are stepping away from the business to pursue other interests, but the head company has said it should reopen under new ownership some time next year.
Sisters Janine Timmermans and Jodi Collins took over the St. Clair Street location at the beginning of 2009 after working as employees under the previous owner. After 10 years, they said it is time to move on.
“We definitely are looking forward to starting a new business on our own,” said Timmermans. “We feel like we’ve learned all we can from here, so we’re just going to take what we learned and start something new.”
They plan to launch a new line of children’s clothing and sell it online so they can work from home.
“We both have young children so (we would like) to spend more time with our families,” said Timmermans. “Running a restaurant like this, you don’t get to spend as much time with your families, so definitely working out of the home will make that a lot easier.”
They will close the restaurant next Thursday.
Although Collins said the business is still “thriving,” several factors contributed to them changing careers at this particular time.
“I know a lot of the businesses out there have the same struggles, right, minimum wage rising,” said Timmermans. “Those weren’t key factors, but everything all together, 10 years of doing this, we just feel like we’ve kind of outgrown it now.”
A statement sent by Melanie D’Aloisio from franchise development at Pita Pit Canada said the restaurant will eventually reopen at the same location.
“We are temporarily closing to update and renovate the Chatham Pita Pit location. We are currently finalizing terms around the ownership change and are excited to share details as soon as we are able to,” the statement read.
“We expect the Chatham location, with an improved look but same awesome food and experience, to relaunch to the community in early 2019.”
Collins said they have about 10 employees who were notified of the decision on Friday. They said they appreciate the work of their staff and the support they’ve received from the community.

The location will close down next Thursday, but the head office of Pita Pit Canada says the location will be under renovations and a new owner or owners should be in place by early 2019.
