Lions, YMCA partner for pond event

OXFORD - Strap on your skates, pond hockey lovers, for the first tournament of its kind in Cumberland County.

The Cumberland YMCA and Oxford Lions Club are joining together to bring the tournament to residents Feb. 11 to 13.

Brad White, Cumberland eco-event coordinator, said the biggest thing the two organizations want to accomplish is showcasing traditional hockey.

“We want it to be less about the competition and more about the camaraderie,” he said. “There won’t be any physical contact but lots of fast skating.”

White said the games to be played on Salt Lake and the Oxford Arena won’t be your typical hockey games.

“We’re using smaller nets. Helmets, gloves and skates are required, shin pads are optional and there are to be no shoulder pads. The games will be three-on-three, with a fourth player dressed, and teams can also have a fifth player on their team. We won’t have goaltenders.”

Goaltenders, said White, won’t be needed as the nets are eight inches tall and six feet wide.

The tournament will include two ice surfaces at the local arena and four on Salt Lake.

“We’re obviously happy the weather is getting colder,” said White.

The two organizations are still looking for volunteers for the event, which could be for setting up the tournament, refereeing hockey games or participating in winter carnival activities.

“We’re trying for this to be a community event rather than just a showcase of talent,” White added.

Trina Clarke, chief executive officer with the YMCA, said joining with the Lions Club in Oxford was an easy decision.

“The YMCA is really big on being active in whatever type of sport or activity a person wants to participate in,” she said.

She added that the Y realized, in discussions with the Lions Club, that there is no other activity such as the tournament around.

“It just sounds like a really fun day,” she said.

The tournament is open to individuals over the age of 13.

Categories include ladies 13-15, 16-18, 1935 and 36+, while the men’s categories are 1315, 16-18, 19-35, 36-49 and 50+. There is a registration fee associated with each category.

For more information, call the Cumberland YMCA at 667-9112. Registration deadline is Jan. 29.
