NSCC Cum­ber­land Cam­pus cel­e­brates grads of 2017

More than 180 stu­dents added their names and skills to the labour force af­ter earn­ing the right to call them­selves grad­u­ates of the Nova Sco­tia Com­mu­nity Col­lege’s Cum­ber­land Cam­pus.

Con­vo­ca­tion cer­e­monies took place in Springhill June 6 be­fore a stand­ing-room only au­di­ence of friends, fam­ily and loved ones. Af­ter many nights study­ing and days spent learn­ing in their oneor two-year dis­ci­plines, NSCC pres­i­dent Don Bu­reaux said it was an hon­our to share the day with those fam­ily mem­bers laud­ing the grad­u­ates ac­com­plish­ments.

“One par­ent shared with us that not only is she an alum of the col­lege, but she will be at the con­vo­ca­tion this year cel­e­brat­ing the grad­u­a­tion of both her son and daugh­ter,” Bu­reaux said. “An­other fam­ily is cel­e­brat­ing four grad­u­a­tions from our Adult Learn­ing Pro­gram. Each story holds its own sense of pride.”

Ev­ery grad­u­ate is a suc­cess story and the cam­puses her­alded the sto­ries of five par­tic­u­lar stu­dents, award­ing them the cam­pus’ high­est hon­ours:

Gov­er­nor Gen­eral’s Aca­demic Medal: Yoshiko Hosokawa, Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion, Ac­count­ing Con­cen­tra­tion

NSCC Board of Gover­nors Award: Rayliene Thomp­son, Par­ale­gal Ser­vices

NSCC Foun­da­tion Award: Tay­lor Ri­p­ley, Busi­ness Ad­min­is­tra­tion, Man­age­ment

NSCC Gold Medal: Mitchell MacNeil, Elec­tri­cal-Con­struc­tion & In­dus­trial

Pres­i­dent’s Award: Roberta Good­win, Geother­mal – Re­frig­er­a­tion Cho­sen by his peers, Vale­dic­to­rian Alexan­der Martin, a grad­u­ate of the Util­ity Line Work­ers pro­gram, of­fered a mes­sage to grads to pur­sue the dreams that brought them to the col­lege.

“You chose your pro­gram be­cause you thought it was some­thing you would love to do. I am sure, if we all stick with it, we will at­tain the jobs we want and turn them into the ca­reers we want,” Martin’s mes­sage reads. “Don’t for­get to have fun, and stay safe.”
