Daniel & Robert

Like a page out of a Halifax bar scene history book, Daniel Sheppard and Robert Ryan met at the Pogue Fado at a Guerilla Gayfare event. And like a page from a romance novel, they got engaged on a balcony in Capri, Italy. “I carried the ring with me for three weeks,” says Daniel. “We wanted a little R&R in Capri at the end of the trip, and I knew I’d do it there.” The pair planned to marry later that year in Baccalieu, at Daniel’s parents’ house, bringing together a tight crew 24 guests to share in the day—a truly Newfoundland day, where the sun showed its face after three days of rain, the harpist happened to live next door and

a justice of the peace was also the mayor. “When we walked out and saw everyone there—it was so nice to see all of our friends and think, ‘Wow, every one of these people loves us a lot’,” says Daniel of his most memorable moment. An intimate meal at the nearby Baccalieu Trail B&B followed the stress-free and simple ceremony, and the next day Daniel and Robert hosted a casual post-wedding celebration with a bonfire, guitars and mummers at his parents house. “You don’t need to have an expensive wedding to have a great wedding. When you have a small wedding you can treat your guests a little more special,” says Daniel. “You can wine and dine them. If people are going to come from away, I’m going to treat them to a beautiful meal and wine.”

It was so nice to see all of our friends and think, ‘Wow, every one of these people loves us a lot.’
