Travel budgets

The Compass - - FRONT PAGE -

It seems there is no set budget amount for Bay Roberts town councillors travelling to the annual Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference, which is held all over the country.

Council decided at the beginning of its term to allow only two councillors a year to attend and who would go would be decided by drawing names from a hat. If the money is not used it is absorbed back into the budget. In addition, councillors are allotted $1,500 per councillor, per year, for other travel including the Municipalities of Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL) annual conventions, which could run to $800, depending on where they are held.

Council’s liaison for the Urban Municipalities Committee (a committee of MNL) — Deputy Mayor Melvin Walsh — gets an additional $1,500 a year to attend those meetings, which are held in different areas of the province, this year Happy-Valley Goose Bay.

For other travel inside the province councillors only require approval from the Executive Committee; while outside travel requires approval from the whole of council four weeks in advance.
