Sentinels undefeated in Placentia
Carbonear Collegiate captured its third tournament championship for 2009 when they defeated the Dunne Memorial Vikings 87-53 in the deciding game of the Sobey’s Invitational Basketball Tournament held at Laval High School in Placentia March 6-7.
The Sentinels got off to a flying start at the tournament on Friday night by dropping the St. Kevin’s High Mustangs 75-33.
“ The Sentinel defense was solid in the second half as the Mustangs were held to just 13 points,” said coach randy Ralph. Top scorers for the Sentinels were Brendan Rose (15), Andrew Ralph (15), Brandon Parrott (14), and Steve McDonald (12).
Later that evening Carbonear Collegiate faced off against the host squad. The game started off as a close high scoring affair with the score 41-39 in favor of the Sentinels at the half. Carbonear’s potent offence pulled ahead in the last 20 minutes headed by forward Jordan Barry who drained 14 baskets and shot three free throws for 31 points.
Carbonear Collegiate pulled away in the final 10 minutes and outscored the Cavaliers 89-68. Brendan Rose (16), Steve McDonald (15), Brandon Parrott (13), and Andrew Ralph (10) added to the score.
Saturday morning saw Carbonear Collegiate match up against the Mobile High Monarchs.
“A victory would propel the Sentinels into the final and they did not disappoint their fans,” said coach Ralph.
“They received great production from the bench and defeated their opponents 73-45,” the coach said. Brendan Rose (19), Brandon Parrott (18), Andrew Ralph (9), Alex White (8), and David Riggs (7) added to the Sentinel score.
In the championship game Carbonear Collegiate faced Dunne Memorial and took an early lead. The Sentinels did not look back as they picked up their third championship victory for 2009 with a final score of 87-53.
Brendan Rose was the big gun for the Sentinels in the final as he scored 20 points. Brandon Parrott (19), Steve McDonald (12), Andrew Ralph (11), and Jordan Barry (10) rounded out scoring in the final.
