Bay Arena hosts Midget A Invitational
The Bay Arena hosted their Midget “A” Rovers Invitational Tournament March 13 -17. The tournament, the first in several years, saw the Goulds Pacers, Marystown Mariners, Harbour Grace Cee Bees, Clarenville Caribous, Placentia Lions, and the Bay Arena Rovers compete for the Woodward Motors Midget A trophy.
The Rovers played their first game on Friday evening with a 7 - 1 victory over the Harbour Grace Cee Bees, and then on Saturday afternoon, another win of 12 to 1 over the Placentia Lions.
The third game played against the Clarenville Caribous, proved to be a tougher battle with the Caribous taking a victory of 9 - 4 over the Rovers.
The Championship game on Sunday found the Rovers in second place to challenge the first place Caribous once again.
This game was scoreless after the first period, but by 11:57 in the second, Rovers’ No. 11 Bradley Mercer scored the game opener, with assists from Jacob Lewis (No. 27), and No. 16. Assistant Captain Michael Bradbury.
At 8:08 of the third period, Phillip Russell (No. 14) scored the second goal for the Rovers, with the assist again by Michael Bradbury. Within 40 seconds Tyler Hill (No. 15) scored a third goal for the Rovers, assisted by Captain Justin Noseworthy ( No. 10). The final unanswered goal of the game was an empty netter scored by No. 8, Ryan Barrett, assisted by Tyler Hill.
Goaltender Tony Bellerose (No. 1) took the shutout and the Bay Arena Rovers took the championship title with a 4 - 0 victory over the Caribuos.
