Trin­ity Con­cep­tion fe­males among prov­ince’s top ath­letes

Three lo­cal fe­male ath­letes have been se­lected as fi­nal­ists for Sport New­found­land and Labrador’s 2008 Pro­vin­cial An­nual Awards.

Al­li­son Rock­wood, Heart’s Con­tent, earned a bronze medal at the Cana­dian In­teruni­ver­sity Sport wrestling cham­pi­onships and a sil­ver medal at the Uni­ver­sity of New Brunswick open wrestling tour­na­ment. She was named Memo­rial Uni­ver­sity’s Wrestler of the Year.

Ali­son has been nom­i­nated for the El­iz­a­beth Swan Se­nior Fe­male Ath­lete of the Year Award.

Carbonear na­tive Vic­to­ria Ralph won a bronze medal at the Na­tional Wrestling Cham­pi­onships in Saskatoon and was named for the sec­ond straight year, most out­stand­ing wrestler at the Cana­di­anA­ma­teurWrestlingAs­so­ci­a­tion (CAWA) At­lantic Cham­pi­onships. Vic­to­ria was named School Sport New­found­land and Labrador’s Fe­male Ath­lete of the Year.

Maura Hayes, Cupids, was the only ath­lete in East­ern Canada named to the Na­tional Ju­nior Volleyball Team. The team trav­elled to Florida dur­ing July 2008 to par­tic­i­pate in an in­ter­na­tional com­pe­ti­tion in which Canada fin­ished fourth. Hayes has nu­mer­ous ac­co­lades in the sport of volleyball in­clud­ing an NLVA Se­nior High Player of the Year Award.

Vic­to­ria and Maura are both fi­nal­ists for the Mar­garet Davis Ju­nior Fe­male Ath­lete of the Year award.

Fi­nal se­lec­tion will take place and the awards will be pre­sented at the SNL Stars and Leg­ends Sports Gala on Satur­day, March 28 at the Sher­a­ton Ho­tel New­found­land in St. John’s.
