Carbonear students enjoy Winter Carnival activities
Students at Davis Elementary always look forward to the Winter Carnival in late February.
The Winter Carnival is a busy time of the year for our school because it is normally in the same week as the 100th Day of School.
The Winter Carnival has many activities up to 20 minutes long. Some activities are as a class and some with another class or the whole school.
The first activity that my Grade 4 class did was to build a snow sculpture. We worked hard to find a good place to build a huge lifesized dinosaur!
When my class had our dinosaur carved out, we put some paint in a used spray bottle to decorate our sculpture. The Grade 1s made penguins at the front of the school and the other Grade 4 class made a long green snake. Our class won!
The next activity for my class was Tug of War with the two other Grade 4 classes. The first round was 4J vs. 4N, then 4H (my class) vs. 4J, then 4N.
After the classes went against one another we had boys vs. girls. Twenty minutes passed before we knew it.
Then it was time for the Rescue Relay with the Grade 1s at the field beside the school.
For the Rescue Relay all Grade 4s make two lines about 20 feet away from the Grade 1s who had done the same. Then the Grade 4s go in pairs with a slide to pull a Grade 1 across to the Grade 4s. When they get back, they tag the next pair of Grade 4s who repeat the steps.
Since we were already with the Grade 1s, we went on to the Cardboard Ski Relay. The Ski Relay is like the Rescue Relay but with cardboard skis and we were about seven feet away from the Grade 1s.
At the end of the day, we passed out cardboard sleds for the school to share and we kept a sled for ourselves and went to the snow bank to go sliding.
When we were done, we lined up to go inside to have some hot chocolate in the cafeteria.
Then the teacher made us happy when she ended the day with: No Homework!
