Lions hand out Zone Level awards

Jes­sica McCarthy won first place in the Lions Zone Level Speak Off, held Mon­day, March 23 at the Bay Roberts Lions Club on Bare­need Road.

The 17-year-old Level 3 stu­dent, who at­tends Carbonear Col­le­giate, chose to speak on The Women of Dar­fur.

Run­ners up

Run­ners up were: Jes­sica Dawe, sec­ond place, rep­re­sent­ing As­cen­sion Col­le­giate; Kyle Riggs, Bac­calieu Col­le­giate and An­drew Rose, Carbonear Col­le­giate, who tied for third place.

McCarthy is the daugh­ter of Su­san Oke and Tony McCarthy, grand­daugh­ter of Mol­lie and the late William Oke and Mary and Michael McCarthy.

Jes­sica plans to at­tend Memo­rial Uni­ver­sity, where she will en­rol in So­cial Stud­ies.

Hot roast beef

Zone Chair Lion David Foote from Bac­calieu Lions Club wel­comed the stu­dents, par­ents and in­vited guests, who were served a hot roast beef meal prior to the com­pe­ti­tion and awards pre­sen­ta­tions.

Cst. Vickie Chalker, Judy Mor­row and Lion Phyl­lis Rus­sell were judges. Lion Wal­ter Snow was time­keeper, while Brian Dawe, Eastlink and Lion Roland Dawe were ques­tion­ers.

Jes­sica will go on to com­pete at the Re­gional Speak Off in Gan­der, April 23.
