Branch 9 donates $9,300 to local organizations
Corp. Matthew Brazil Branch 9 of the Royal Canadian Legion, Spaniard’s Bay presented more than $9,300 in donations during its annual Honours and Awards Banquet Feb. 29.
Included was a donation of $2,035.16 to the Cystic Fibrosis Society, representing the proceeds of the annual Cystic Fibrosis Darts Tournament held the same month.
Angeline Mercer and her son Travis, a cystic fibrosis sufferer accepted the donation to the society presented by Ern Abbott, 2nd vice president and Com. Shannon Whelan who have both worked tirelessly for many years on behalf of the worthy cause.
Branch 9 also presented a cheque for $ 4,658 to Holy Redeemer Elementary School representing the proceeds of the annual take-out cold plate, fully funded and prepared by the branch.
A donation of $500 was made to RCAC 2565 Army Cadet Corps and donations of $200 each were made to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Heritage Society, the Environmental committee, the Recreation Committee and Holy Redeemer Church.
The Ladies Auxiliary presented a $1,000 donation to the Legion.
Bill Titford, treasurer, and Calvin Crane, immediate past president, both of Provincial Command presented the Provincial Command Student Bursary of $1,000 to Ashley Filmore. Ashley is the daughter of Darlene Sheppard, ordinary member, Branch 9.
In addition to donations, awards were presented to various members of the Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary.
Legion members receiving awards were: Harold Crane and Lorne Murrin, 10 year Associate Member’s Pin; David Pike, 15 year Ordinary Member’s Pin; Claude Pike, Evelyn Small and Shannon Whelan, 20 year Ordinary Member’s Pin; Wayne Abbott, Clyde Boone, Bill Luscombe, 25 year Ordinary Member’s Pin; Ron Menchions, Violet Pauls, and Jim Titford, 25 year Associate Member’s Pin. Jack Chipman received the Secretary’s Bar and Membership Chairman’s Bar; Dave Thistle, Poppy Chairman’s Bar; Ron Coombs, Past Officer’s Medal and 1st Vice President’s Medal; Ron Power and Gordon Murrin, Certificate of Merit; Les Coombs, Lloyd Gosse, Ted Jones and Evelyn Small, Life membership; Debbie Coombs and Melissa Mousseaux, five year Membership Pin (LA); Emmie Lynch, 15 year Membership Pin (LA); Myrtle Mercer, Certificate of Merit (LA); Shirley Butt, Mary Tiller, Millie Gosse and Rosalind Newman, Chaplain’s Bars (Past Service).
Mayor John Drover, District 2 Commander Leslie Forward and Calvin Crane, immediate past president of Provincial Command were special guests.
The evening concluded with a dance with music provided by the Legion Boys.
