Branch 9 do­nates $9,300 to lo­cal or­ga­ni­za­tions

Corp. Matthew Brazil Branch 9 of the Royal Cana­dian Le­gion, Spa­niard’s Bay pre­sented more than $9,300 in do­na­tions dur­ing its an­nual Hon­ours and Awards Ban­quet Feb. 29.

In­cluded was a do­na­tion of $2,035.16 to the Cys­tic Fi­bro­sis So­ci­ety, rep­re­sent­ing the pro­ceeds of the an­nual Cys­tic Fi­bro­sis Darts Tour­na­ment held the same month.

An­ge­line Mercer and her son Travis, a cys­tic fi­bro­sis suf­ferer ac­cepted the do­na­tion to the so­ci­ety pre­sented by Ern Ab­bott, 2nd vice pres­i­dent and Com. Shan­non Whe­lan who have both worked tire­lessly for many years on be­half of the wor­thy cause.

Branch 9 also pre­sented a cheque for $ 4,658 to Holy Redeemer Ele­men­tary School rep­re­sent­ing the pro­ceeds of the an­nual take-out cold plate, fully funded and pre­pared by the branch.

A do­na­tion of $500 was made to RCAC 2565 Army Cadet Corps and do­na­tions of $200 each were made to the Vol­un­teer Fire Bri­gade, the Her­itage So­ci­ety, the En­vi­ron­men­tal com­mit­tee, the Recre­ation Com­mit­tee and Holy Redeemer Church.

The Ladies Aux­il­iary pre­sented a $1,000 do­na­tion to the Le­gion.

Bill Tit­ford, trea­surer, and Calvin Crane, im­me­di­ate past pres­i­dent, both of Pro­vin­cial Com­mand pre­sented the Pro­vin­cial Com­mand Stu­dent Bur­sary of $1,000 to Ashley Fil­more. Ashley is the daugh­ter of Dar­lene Shep­pard, or­di­nary mem­ber, Branch 9.

In ad­di­tion to do­na­tions, awards were pre­sented to var­i­ous mem­bers of the Le­gion and the Ladies Aux­il­iary.

Jack Chip­man re­ceived the Sec­re­tary’s Bar and Mem­ber­ship Chair­man’s Bar; Dave This­tle, Poppy Chair­man’s Bar; Ron Coombs, Past Of­fi­cer’s Medal and 1st Vice Pres­i­dent’s Medal; Ron Power and Gor­don Mur­rin, Cer­tifi­cate of Merit; Les Coombs, Lloyd Gosse, Ted Jones and Eve­lyn Small, Life mem­ber­ship; Debbie Coombs and Melissa Mousseaux, five year Mem­ber­ship Pin (LA); Em­mie Lynch, 15 year Mem­ber­ship Pin (LA); Myr­tle Mercer, Cer­tifi­cate of Merit (LA); Shirley Butt, Mary Tiller, Mil­lie Gosse and Ros­alind New­man, Chap­lain’s Bars (Past Ser­vice).

Mayor John Drover, District 2 Com­man­der Les­lie For­ward and Calvin Crane, im­me­di­ate past pres­i­dent of Pro­vin­cial Com­mand were spe­cial guests.

The evening con­cluded with a dance with mu­sic pro­vided by the Le­gion Boys.
