Councils are calling

f you didn’t know that May 20 was Municipal Awareness Day, you probably weren’t alone. The day passed quietly, if not silently, in Port aux Basques and many other municipalities across the province.

There was some advertising to let people know the day was coming up, a few news releases from the provincial government and Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, but that’s about it.

In past years, the Town of Port aux Basques arranged activities to mark the day and encourage residents to increase their understanding of municipal governance. Unfortunately, those events were often poorly attended, sometimes with only one or two people showing up for scheduled events. This year the council decided not to bother.

Perhaps municipal politics doesn’t have the same profile as its provincial or federal counterparts, but just because decisions are made within town limits instead of in St. John’s or Ottawa doesn’t make them any less important.
