Astros take first place in provincial cheerleading competition
Ascension Collegiate Astros Cheerleading Team has proven the old cliché, hard work really does pay off.
The team took first place June 7 in the Newfoundland and Labrador Cheerleading Association Provincial Competition (Level IV) in the Senior High Division.
Level IV was the highest level of competition this year, and the Astros competed against 10 other teams.
The girls also won the Grand Champions award, which went to the highest scoring team in the entire competition.
Jennifer Greeley, one of the team coaches says she is extremely proud of the team and still cannot believe they won provincials.
“These girls work extremely hard,” Greeley says. “We’ve spent the entire school year training for this competition. We’ve spent every day together putting last minute touches on the routine - and it showed! I was part of this team seven years ago when the Astros last won the provincial title and it feels great to bring that trophy home again!”
Kerilynn Smith, the other coach, believes “the team punched in a really rough week. The girls spent the year fundraising for new uniforms, which did not come in on time.”
She says this really set the team back and everyone was extremely disappointed.
“They quickly realized that uniforms didn’t matter, as long as they went out there and did their best - and that’s exactly what they did! They were absolutely amazing. What a perfect way to end the year!”
The captains for the 2008-2009 school year are Desiree Bussey and Brianna Hynes. The standings for the competition are as follows:
Ascension Collegiate Gonzaga Regional High O’Donel High School
Holy Heart of Mary Regional High Carbonear Collegiate.
