Is the Carbonear Town Coun­cil liv­ing high on the tax­pay­ers’ hog at cit­i­zens’ ex­pense? At least one con­cerned ci­ti­zen is con­vinced they are. See his let­ter to the ed­i­tor.

Dear ed­i­tor,

I am writ­ing this let­ter to in­form the tax­pay­ers of Carbonear as to how our tax dol­lars are be­ing spent by the cur­rent town coun­cil.

I have al­ready sub­mit­ted a let­ter to the Hon­ourable Dianne Whalen, Min­is­ter of Mu­nic­i­pal Af­fairs, in which I re­quested an in-depth in­ves­ti­ga­tion into the spending ac­tiv­i­ties of the tax­pay­ers’ monies. I have also re­quested the depart­ment re­move the cur­rent coun­cil, as well as the town ad­min­is­tra­tor from their po­si­tions.

I have ob­tained re­ceipts from the coun­cil of­fice which show tax­pay­ers’ monies be­ing spent on staff bar­be­cues, Christ­mas par­ties, as well as staff so­cials, all be­ing paid for by the tax­pay­ers.

Here are some ex­am­ples of th­ese ex­pen­di­tures:

2006 Staff and Coun­cil Christ­mas din­ner and dance:

A to­tal of $2,203.30 was spent on this func­tion and items pur­chased in­cluded din­ners for staff and spouses, drink tick­ets, wine pur­chases, mu­sic, and the cost of a lo­cal taxi to bring the em­ploy­ees home af­ter the dance.

2006 Staff and Coun­cil Christ­mas lun­cheon:

A to­tal of $794.45 was spent on this func­tion and items pur­chased in­cluded liquor, sundry items, en­ter­tain­ment, and chicken.

Also in­cluded was the pur­chase of tur­keys for all Coun­cil mem­bers and staff at a cost of $906.96.

To­tal cost of the fes­tive ac­tiv­i­ties for the work­ers and coun­cil mem­bers in 2006 amounted to $3,904.71.

2007 Staff and Coun­cil An­nual BBQ:

A to­tal of $1,546.15 was spent on this event and items pur­chased in­cluded liquor; sundry items; mu­sic; beer pur­chases; steaks; and a taxi ser­vice to take the em­ploy­ees home af­ter the func­tion ended.

Staff and Coun­cil Christ­mas din­ner and dance:

A to­tal of $2,504.90 was spent on this oc­ca­sion and items pur­chased in­cluded liquor, sundry items, mu­sic, party sup­plies which in­cluded Santa hats for the em­ploy­ees as well as prizes to be given out dur­ing the night, beer pur­chases, din­ners for staff and spouses, bar­tender ser­vice, and of course last, but not least, a taxi ser­vice to drive the em­ploy­ees home af­ter­wards.

2007 Staff and Coun­cil Christ­mas lun­cheon:

A to­tal of $309.74 was spent on this func­tion, which in­cluded liquor pur­chases, sundry items, and chicken.

Also in­cluded was the pur­chase of tur­keys for all coun­cil mem­bers and staff at a cost of $1,028.02.

To­tal cost of the so­cial events for the work­ers and coun­cil mem­bers in 2007 amounted to $5,079.07.

2008 Staff and Coun­cil An­nual BBQ:

A to­tal of $1,626.20 was spent on this event, which in­cluded steaks, sal­ads, liquor, beer pur­chases, en­ter­tain­ment, and a taxi to drive ev­ery­body home af­ter­wards.

2008 Staff and Coun­cil Christ­mas party:

A to­tal of $2,675.84 was spent for this party, and in­cluded mu­sic, liquor pur­chases, din­ners, bar­tender ser­vice, sundry items, and lets not for­get the taxi ser­vice to drive them all home.

2008 Staff and Coun­cil Lun­cheon:

This party amounted to $505.16 and in­cluded chicken, liquor pur­chases, beer pur­chases, and sundry items.
