Off the mound
A new minor softball program is off the mound in Carbonear. Youngsters are learning how to pitch, catch, hit and run - all the basics of the game of softball - and they are having a barrel of fun.
The Carbonear Minor Softball Program is off to a great start, according to organizer, David Kennedy. The program got off the mound last Tuesday June 16 and already has over 80 children registered.
The program offers two field sessions per group each week, with sessions scheduled from 5:30- 8:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. The beginners (aged 3-4) and 5-8 play from 5:30 to 6:30, while the 9-12 year olds play from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Kennedy explained, the program is based on skill development and learning the basics of the softball game.
One of the program co-coordinators, David Doran, said, “the turnout has been excellent thus far and the children are proving to be quick learners and very energetic.”
Each session is being split with the first half focusing on skill development, and the second part devoted to game or game simulated activities.
Any children wishing to take part in the program are asked to attend at any of the above appropriate times.
