Some new blood on Harbour Grace council
Veteran mayor Don Coombs had no trouble holding onto his chain of office in Harbour Grace this week.
In the second mayoral race with his rival, Kathy Tetford, Coombs attracted 919 votes to Tetford’s 586, a margin of 333 votes. Tetford did manage to narrow the margin of Coombs’ victory from the 421 votes by which he defeated then deputy mayor Tetford in the 2005 municipal general election. The final score at that time was Coombs, 1,046; Tetford, 625.
Four new faces will sit around the council chambers for the next term. Newcomer Terry Barnes, who has been unsuccessful in previous elections, topped the poll this time around with 944 votes, followed by incumbents Joan A. Short, 855; Wendell E. Hunt Sr., 835; Albert ( Bud) Chafe, 747; newcomer Walter R. Walsh, 698 and incumbent David Murphy, 671.
Incumbent councillors, Tom Short with 594 and Steven O’Neill, 583 were unsuccessful in their bids for re-election.
Kevin Haire, with 398 votes and Eric F. Reynolds with 349 were also unsuccessful in their attempts at a council seat.
Harbour Grace has 2,553 eligible voters.
