Better late than never!
It took 15 years to get there, but this Carbonear-based fast-patch team has finally captured the coveted St. John’s Intermediate Fastpitch crown.
Coastal Marine and Recreation has finally won the Molson St. John’s Intermediate Fastpitch League, formerly known as the Molson St. John’s Junior League, after 15 years of trying.
The Carbonear entry claimed the title last Tuesday, Oct. 13 with a 3-1 win over the Goulds.
Adam Janes (7 IP, 9 K, 1BB, 5 H, 1R) pitched the win and scored two of Coastal’s runs.
Chris Doran and Aaron Janes both went 2-3 at the plate and provided all the RBI’s.
Coastal advanced to the league championship by beating Bay Roberts in the last two games of the quarterfinal after they lost game one.
Carbonear then upset the first place team, 3-Cheers Pub, in the semi-final in two straight games.
Adam Janes and David Kennedy both pitched a win in the first two series. Janes pitched all three wins in the championship series, with Kennedy picking up one save. Due to Adam Janes’ pitching (61, 46.2 IP, 66 K, 1.36 era and 2 SO) and hitting (12-26,0.462 BA, 9 R, 2 BB, 2 RBI’s) he was named playoff MVP (most valuable player).
The team joined the St. John’s Molson Junior League in 1995 but had failed to win a championship until this year. They had several second place finishes at past provincial championships and even finished first overall after round robin play in both 1997 and 2006. David Kennedy is the only remaining player on the team who started with the team 14 years ago.
This is the second championship that Coastal has won in as many months as they claimed the Eastern Canadian Senior C Fastpitch Title on the Carbonear fields in September with a 12-inning win over Torbay Bay.
Since the start of the Eastern Canadian Championship Coastal has won 11 out of 12 games including the league final. The only loss was to the Goulds in game 4 of the final series.
This has been the most games Coastal Marine and Recreation has played in a season, 47, as the team has been quite busy since June 7. This final game has been the latest game ever played in the league due to the rainy finish, which kept delay- ing the championship series and pushed the final to October 13.
