Share your Christmas story
Everyone has a story to tell. And there is no time for storytelling like Christmas.
The Compass is extending an open invitation to our readers to use our pages to share your Christmas stories, in your own words.
We have often heard adults speaking to children about their own childhood recollections of Christmas.
The yarns usually begin with: “ When I was your age, for Christmas we got...”
Children growing up in the age of iPods, text messaging and Twitter have no way of knowing what Christmas was like in the 20th century.
But those of you whose childhood can be traced anytime between the 1940s and ‘80s do. And that’s what makes your childhood Christmas so vastly different from the one your children and grandchildren will experience in December 2009.
The contrast between then and now is what makes the changes brought about by the passage of time so interesting.
Your own personal memory of Christmas past could be about a special toy or gift you received, a long lost friend who showed up unexpectedly, an interesting yarn told by a senior, a chance encounter with Santa, or the time you went jannying and...
It doesn’t even have to be about your childhood or something that happened 40 or 50 years ago. It could be about something that happened last Christmas, or any time of the year. Just think about something interesting that happened and let your imagination do the rest.
Not too fancy
Don’t worry about having to be too fancy with the writing. Our editors will doll it up and put a nice colourful Christmas bow on it for you.
We’re just looking for a brief story. Start off as if you were writing a letter to a friend and don’t stop until you have about 500 words. Make it short, sweet and to the point.
Friday Dec. 11 will be the deadline for all submissions, which must be signed by the writer. Please include your telephone number in case we need to contact you for clarification. Your phone number will not appear in the paper.
We look forward to reading your Christmas memories and sharing them with our readers.
Your stories will appear in our special Christmas issue on Dec. 22
While all stories will be subject to editing, to save time in typesetting, we would prefer if stories could be e-mailed to: firstname.lastname@example.org
If e-mailing is not possible, your submissions can be Faxed to: 709596-1700
Mailed to: P.O. Box 760, Carbonear NL A1Y 1C3 or dropped off at our office, 176 Water Street, Carbonear.
