Woman suc­cumbs to in­juries

A 42-year-old Carbonear woman,

suc­cumbed to her in­juries last Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon, Dec. 23, less than 48 hours af­ter be­ing struck by a ve­hi­cle on the T.C. Square park­ing lot Mon­day night, Dec. 21. Sgt. Rick Robin­son of Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion district said late Wed­nes­day “ the woman passed away at the Health Sciences Cen­tre (in St. John’s) this af­ter­noon.”

He said, “ the vic­tim’s name is be­ing with­held from pub­li­ca­tion at this time pend­ing con­sent of the fam­ily.”

Early Tues­day morn­ing RCMP re­ported the vic­tim to be in crit­i­cal con­di­tion suf­fer­ing from se­ri­ous head in­juries af­ter she was struck by a ve­hi­cle on the T.C. Square park­ing lot the night be­fore.

Sgt. Rick Robin­son re­ported at ap­prox­i­mately 10 p.m. Mon­day, Dec. 21 of­fi­cers re­sponded to a re­port that a pedes­trian had been struck by a ve­hi­cle on the T.C. Mall park­ing lot near Do­min­ion.

“In­ves­ti­ga­tion and in­ter­views of wit­nesses in­di­cate (the woman) was cross­ing from the park­ing lot to­wards the Do­min­ion en­trance of the Mall,” the po­lice spokesman noted

“A ve­hi­cle be­ing driven by a 29 year old Carbonear man was trav­el­ling along the lane in front of the Mall and struck the woman,” Sgt. Robin­son said in his ini­tial re­port.

The ve­hi­cle that struck the woman was re­ported to be Honda Civic.

The woman was taken to Carbonear Gen­eral Hospi­tal and later trans­ferred to the Health Sci­ence Cen­tre in St. John’s, where she re­mained “ in crit­i­cal con­di­tion... with se­ri­ous head in­juries,” ac­cord­ing to po­lice

Sgt. Robin­son said, “ it ap­pears weather and poor vis­i­bil­ity were ma­jor con­tribut­ing fac­tors; speed does not ap­pear to have been a fac­tor. The mat­ter re­mains un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion.”
