Although it took a couple of years and repeated applications, Barb Hutchings is finally accepted as a member of the Spaniard's Bay Volunteer Fire Department.

The experienced firefighter moved home to Spaniard's Bay in December 2007 and almost immediately applied for membership with the department. Despite being qualified for the position, she was repeatedly turned down.

After taking her story to The Compass, local and provincial media and town officials became involved in the case. Hutchings was eventually voted in, along with another woman, Brenda Seymour.

" It's been a long, hard fight," said Hutchings, " but it's been well worth it. I'm going to do my job the same as I did when I was away --step up and do what needs to be done."
