It's a big, long word that doesn't roll easily off the tongue. But all it means is 175th anniversary. And the province's oldest stone church, which happens to be in Harbour Grace is gearing up to mark just that milestone this year.

St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Harbour Grace is continuing its plans to celebrate its Quartoseptcentennial this year.

The 175th anniversary of the laying of the corner stone will be celebrated during the week of July 1118.

A 20-member committee was formed two years ago from all church groups including the Church Lads Brigade (CLB), Anglican Church Women (ACW), Altar Guild, vestry, wardens, choir, Sunday school, congregation and ministry.

The itinerary for the event was finalized t their January meeting.

Five members from the 150th Anniversary Celebrations committee set up 25 years ago have returned to help organize and prepare for this year’s event. Don Regular, David and Doug Moores, Hayward Shute and Tom Caines all volunteered their time and talents to a very successful celebration in 1985.

In September, 2009 St. Paul’s welcomed the first female in the 245 years history of St. Paul’s to ever serve as Rector of the Parish. The Reverend Shirley Noseworthy has joined the Celebration committee. As a part of a federal Job Creation Program ( JCP) grant a history booklet of St. Paul’s has been completed.

The committee has found several ways to let anyone who wishes to attend the events find information.

A4 ft. x 8 ft. aluminium omega panel sign has been placed on the lawn at the entrance to St. Paul’s Church.

Committee chair Sonia Williams said, “ we are very pleased with planning so far. Our goal to include all groups within St. Paul’s has been achieved. Things are progressing; many things have already been completed to date with more to do as celebrations near. We have a great working committee and we are looking toward a memorable week of activities.”

The itinerary will be included with the letters sent to the members of the parish in their spring update.
