A Conception Bay North soldier, who has already been decorated for her distinguished military service to her country, is receiving a national honour.
Warrant Officer Claudette Saunders of South River has been appointed a member of the Order of Military Merit.
W.O. Saunders, M.M.M. C.D., is an Avionics Technician with 17 Wing’s 440 ‘ Vampire’ Transport Squadron based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.
Governor General Michaëlle Jean, who is also Commander-in-Chief of Canada, made the announcement last week.
A news release from her squadron public affairs department described W.O. Saunders as a member, “who has served her nation with honour and distinction throughout her entire Air Forces career.”
She will receive the insignia of her appointment during an investiture ceremony to be held at a later date.
WO Saunders joined the Canadian Forces in April, 1981 and has served at bases in Greenwood Nova Scotia; Chatham New Brunswick, Cold Lake and Edmonton, Alberta and Yellowknife, NWT.
In addition to having visited Haiti, the British Isles and Sri Lanka, Saunders has participated in several domestic operations along with active duty deployments in Bosnia and Afghanistan.
Her decorations include the South West Asia Service Medal with Afghanistan clasp, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal, the NATO Non-article 5, and the Canadian Decoration with clasp. She has been awarded the CEFCOM Commander’s Commendation (Afghanistan) and the Air Force Association of Canada Air Person of the Year (2009).
Saunders is currently deployed as part of Operation Podium, the Canadian Forces support to the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics in Vancouver, British Columbia.
