A Con­cep­tion Bay North sol­dier, who has al­ready been dec­o­rated for her dis­tin­guished mil­i­tary ser­vice to her coun­try, is re­ceiv­ing a na­tional hon­our.

War­rant Of­fi­cer Claudette Saun­ders of South River has been ap­pointed a mem­ber of the Or­der of Mil­i­tary Merit.

W.O. Saun­ders, M.M.M. C.D., is an Avion­ics Tech­ni­cian with 17 Wing’s 440 ‘ Vam­pire’ Trans­port Squadron based in Yel­lowknife, North­west Ter­ri­to­ries.

Gov­er­nor Gen­eral Michaëlle Jean, who is also Com­man­der-in-Chief of Canada, made the an­nounce­ment last week.

A news release from her squadron pub­lic af­fairs depart­ment de­scribed W.O. Saun­ders as a mem­ber, “who has served her na­tion with hon­our and dis­tinc­tion through­out her en­tire Air Forces ca­reer.”

She will re­ceive the in­signia of her ap­point­ment dur­ing an in­vesti­ture cer­e­mony to be held at a later date.

WO Saun­ders joined the Cana­dian Forces in April, 1981 and has served at bases in Green­wood Nova Sco­tia; Chatham New Brunswick, Cold Lake and Ed­mon­ton, Al­berta and Yel­lowknife, NWT.

In ad­di­tion to hav­ing vis­ited Haiti, the Bri­tish Isles and Sri Lanka, Saun­ders has par­tic­i­pated in sev­eral do­mes­tic op­er­a­tions along with ac­tive duty de­ploy­ments in Bos­nia and Afghanistan.

Her dec­o­ra­tions in­clude the South West Asia Ser­vice Medal with Afghanistan clasp, Cana­dian Peace­keep­ing Ser­vice Medal, the NATO Non-ar­ti­cle 5, and the Cana­dian Dec­o­ra­tion with clasp. She has been awarded the CEFCOM Com­man­der’s Com­men­da­tion (Afghanistan) and the Air Force As­so­ci­a­tion of Canada Air Per­son of the Year (2009).

Saun­ders is cur­rently de­ployed as part of Op­er­a­tion Podium, the Cana­dian Forces sup­port to the 2010 Win­ter Olympics and Par­a­lympics in Van­cou­ver, Bri­tish Columbia.
