Bay Arena tops at bantam invitational
Host Clarenville Caribous finish third
Bay Arena Rovers captured the top prize at the Clarenville bantam invitational hockey tournament Feb. 13 and 14.
The Rovers defeated Harbour Grace CeeBees in the final.
They went undefeated in the six-team tournament. They opened with a 5-4 win over the Gander Bay Flyers and followed that up with a convincing 7-2 win over Exploits. They earned a spot in the final with an 8-4 win over the CeeBees
The CeeBees had the second best record after round robin play. They downed Exploits 96 in their opening game of the tournament and took a 3-1 win over Placentia. Their only loss in round robin play came at the hands of the Rovers.
The host Clarenville Caribous managed one win and a tie to finish third. They won their opener, doubling Placentia 6-3 and pulled out a 5-5 tie against the Gander Flyers. They dropped their final game of the round to Exploits 6-4.
The championship game between the Rovers and CeeBees saw the Harbour Grace squad take a 5-3 lead into the third period. However, the Rovers were determined to keep their winning streak in tack and rebounded for five unanswered goals in the final stanza for the win.
