Eastern waste management plan delayed indefinitely
No one will be seeing Eastern Newfoundland’s garbage game plan anytime soon.
Transcontinental Media has learned the committee devising the regional waste management strategy has abandoned the goal of submitting its final plan to the province by month’s end.
Instead, Eastern Waste Management has decided to weigh another option against the one it had been pursuing.
“ We’ve been building one model,” committee chair Ken Kelly said. “Now we’ve got to build another.”
Struck by the minister of Municipal Affairs in 2008, Eastern Waste Management was charged with overseeing the “ modernization of solid waste management” from Clarenville and east, including all of the Avalon Peninsula. It was thought at the time that the cost of creating a waste management plan would be roughly $2 million, for committee expenditures and consultants’ fees.
