Men face drug, weapons charges

Two men from the Carbonear area ar­rested late last week on drug and weapons re­lated charges are in po­lice cus­tody where they will re­main un­til their next court ap­pear­ance Thurs­day April 22.

The ac­cused men ap­peared in Pro­vin­cial Court in Har­bour Grace last Fri­day, April 16 to face the charges.

Lead In­ves­ti­ga­tor Cst. John Hedges said bail was de­nied for both ac­cused men, who were ar­rested Thurs­day April 15 af­ter po­lice found a quan­tity of ec­stasy pills, a 9-inch dag­ger-type knife and a piece of 2 x 3 wood with a num­ber of nails stick­ing out of the end in their ve­hi­cle.

“One man is fac­ing charges of pos­ses­sion of a con­trolled sub­stance for the pur­pose of traf­fick­ing, pos­ses­sion of a weapon danger­ous to the pub­lic and re­sist­ing ar­rest,” the RCMP spokesman said. The other man has been charged with pos­ses­sion of a con­trolled sub­stance for the pur­pose of traf­fick­ing.

Sgt. Rick Bud­den said mem­bers of the Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion District RCMP checked a sus­pi­cious ve­hi­cle near the mall in Carbonear Thurs­day af­ter­noon. The po­lice ar­rested the two men when they dis­cov­ered a quan­tity of Ec­stasy pills. When po­lice searched the ve­hi­cle they found a 9-inch dag­ger type knife and a piece of 2 X 3 with a num­ber of nails stick­ing out of the end.

Sgt. Bud­den told The Com­pass both de­fen­dants are in their early twen­ties. One is from Carbonear while the other is from Vic­to­ria.
