The Avalon regional table tennis team exceeded expectations at the 2010 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Grand FallsWindsor.
The Avalon region table tennis team competed recently at the 2010 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games and exceeded expectations.
The team consisted of eight players ( four Under-14 and four Under-17) made up mostly of players from the Harbour Grace and Carbonear area.
The team play involved the boys’ team and the girls’ team playing separately. During the team play, each player of the team played two opponents on the other team from other regions for a total of eight games for each encounter (total for the tournament was 48 matches).
The boys’ team placed fourth in the standings, much better than the seventh place out of eight seeding with which they started the games.
The girls’ team took the bronze medal. This team had a very close and exciting match against the Central team during the crossover match.
At the end of the regulation play during that match both teams were tied. The tie was broken by a doubles match. The two Avalon players, Elizabeth Hicks and Anna Finn, played tremendously well, especially since they had very limited practice in doubles. The Avalon girls took the first set. The next two were very close with the Central team coming out on top. The last set was taken by the Central team and they moved on to the goldmedal match, which they won.
The Avalon team played in the bronze-medal match and easily won over the Western team.
After the team event, individual play began. All players made an impressive showing. Elizabeth Hicks won a bronze in Under-14 girls; Natalie Finn placed fourth (Under-17 girls); Anna Finn placed fifth (Under17 girls); Taylor Norman placed sixth (Under-14 boys); Matthew Crawford placed fourth ( Under-17 boys) and Adam Drover placed eighth (Under17 boys).
