The Avalon re­gional ta­ble ten­nis team ex­ceeded ex­pec­ta­tions at the 2010 New­found­land and Labrador Win­ter Games in Grand Fall­sWind­sor.

The Avalon re­gion ta­ble ten­nis team com­peted re­cently at the 2010 New­found­land and Labrador Win­ter Games and ex­ceeded ex­pec­ta­tions.

The team con­sisted of eight play­ers ( four Un­der-14 and four Un­der-17) made up mostly of play­ers from the Har­bour Grace and Carbonear area.

The team play in­volved the boys’ team and the girls’ team play­ing sep­a­rately. Dur­ing the team play, each player of the team played two op­po­nents on the other team from other re­gions for a to­tal of eight games for each en­counter (to­tal for the tour­na­ment was 48 matches).

The boys’ team placed fourth in the stand­ings, much bet­ter than the sev­enth place out of eight seed­ing with which they started the games.

The girls’ team took the bronze medal. This team had a very close and ex­cit­ing match against the Cen­tral team dur­ing the cross­over match.

At the end of the reg­u­la­tion play dur­ing that match both teams were tied. The tie was bro­ken by a dou­bles match. The two Avalon play­ers, El­iz­a­beth Hicks and Anna Finn, played tremen­dously well, es­pe­cially since they had very lim­ited prac­tice in dou­bles. The Avalon girls took the first set. The next two were very close with the Cen­tral team com­ing out on top. The last set was taken by the Cen­tral team and they moved on to the goldmedal match, which they won.

The Avalon team played in the bronze-medal match and eas­ily won over the West­ern team.

Af­ter the team event, in­di­vid­ual play be­gan. All play­ers made an im­pres­sive show­ing. El­iz­a­beth Hicks won a bronze in Un­der-14 girls; Natalie Finn placed fourth (Un­der-17 girls); Anna Finn placed fifth (Un­der17 girls); Tay­lor Nor­man placed sixth (Un­der-14 boys); Matthew Craw­ford placed fourth ( Un­der-17 boys) and Adam Drover placed eighth (Un­der17 boys).
