The minister expected his parishioner “to offer very complimentary opinions about the sermon.”

Mr. Perry, who was older than Rev. Smith and, the latter wrote in his autobiography, “much wiser,” said, “My young friend, there was not one person in the church yesterday who was not fully convinced of the truth of Christ’s resurrection. Therefore, your eloquence in defense of it was a beating of the air. Next time, try to give us something more practical.”

In later years, Smith ruefully admitted that he had “ felt considerably chagrined — in fact, I simply wilted. But I could not help feeling that my critic was right, and I have been grateful ever since for that Monday morning’s comment on my Easter sermon.”
