As­cen­sion stu­dent wins Knights speak-off

Jes­sica Dawe, a Level 2 stu­dent at As­cen­sion Col­le­giate, Bay Roberts took first place in the Dal­ton As­sem­bly Fourth De­gree, Knights of Colum­bus Re­gional Pub­lic Speak­ing com­pe­ti­tion last month.

The event was held March 14 at St. Fran­cis School, Har­bour Grace.

Jes­sica spoke on the topic, Why is the use of drugs on the in­crease among teenagers to­day?

Sec­ond place went to Ryan Wil­liams, a Level 2 stu­dent at Carbonear Col­le­giate. Ryan’s topic was, The es­ca­lat­ing crime rate - Is there a de­ter­rent?

Kevin King also a Level 2 stu­dent at Carbonear Col­le­giate fin­ished in third place. Kevin spoke on the topic, Sports and Re­cre- ation - the ben­e­fits of ex­er­cise.

The com­pe­ti­tion was one of many held by the Fourth De­gree As­sem­blies through­out New­found­land and Labrador each year.

Par­tic­i­pants who spoke for be­tween five to seven min­utes, were judged on con­tent and de­liv­ery, of their re­spec­tive speeches.

A spokesman for the con­test or­ga­niz­ers said, “all con­tes­tants gave ex­cel­lent pre­sen­ta­tions.”

Justina Flem­ing, Pa­trick Collins and Regi­nald O’Neill acted as judges for the event.

The win qual­i­fied Jes­sica Dawe to go on to rep­re­sent her school and Dal­ton As­sem­bly, Knights of Colum­bus at the pro­vin­cial fi­nals held April 17 at the Knights of Colum­bus in Gan­der.
