Ascension student wins Knights speak-off
Jessica Dawe, a Level 2 student at Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts took first place in the Dalton Assembly Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus Regional Public Speaking competition last month.
The event was held March 14 at St. Francis School, Harbour Grace.
Jessica spoke on the topic, Why is the use of drugs on the increase among teenagers today?
Second place went to Ryan Williams, a Level 2 student at Carbonear Collegiate. Ryan’s topic was, The escalating crime rate - Is there a deterrent?
Kevin King also a Level 2 student at Carbonear Collegiate finished in third place. Kevin spoke on the topic, Sports and Recre- ation - the benefits of exercise.
The competition was one of many held by the Fourth Degree Assemblies throughout Newfoundland and Labrador each year.
Participants who spoke for between five to seven minutes, were judged on content and delivery, of their respective speeches.
A spokesman for the contest organizers said, “all contestants gave excellent presentations.”
Justina Fleming, Patrick Collins and Reginald O’Neill acted as judges for the event.
The win qualified Jessica Dawe to go on to represent her school and Dalton Assembly, Knights of Columbus at the provincial finals held April 17 at the Knights of Columbus in Gander.
