One day before the lobster season was to open, Newman Short nearly lost his boat because of the strong NorEaster that pounded Hermitage-Sandyville.
The boat broke from its mooring in Sandyville’s inner harbour and drifted past the breakwater towards the rocks and coves on the western side adjacent to the road going to Seal Cove.
With the help of other lobster fishers in Sandyville, they were able to get the boat off the rocks and tow it back to the slipway where all had a chance to inspect the damage. Mr. Short is uncertain when he can begin putting his pots in the water.
The big rocks of the cove and the pummeling of the waves did their damage to the bottom of Mr. Short’s boat; he will need fiberglass repairs before he can put the boat back in the water.
