Off the ground
It’s not quite ready for action yet. But town officials in Bay Roberts say a new outdoor sports facility is about a year away from beaing ready for action. The site will serve as a soccer pitch/walking track and green space.
A new state-of-the-art sports facility in Bay Roberts is about a year away from opening. Ron Delaney, director of development with the town, said construction of the soccer pitch/ walking track, part of the Wilbur Sparkes Recreation Complex, got off the ground last year. While the track has become a popular site for walkers, to date, no teams have taken to the field for a game of soccer.
While this is the case, Delaney assured The Compass that everything is on track with the slopedrainage facility. “All’s going according to plan,” he said. “ We might be a couple of months off, but when you have a short growing season, two months can make a difference.”
The short growing season is the main reason for the delay in opening.
Because of excessive rain last summer, the sod-laying couldn’t be completed until November. “ You hope, of course,” Delaney said, “ that conditions will be ideal for the sod to adhere to the root system.” However, a game won’t be played on the pitch until at least June of 2011.
Development director Ron Delaney of the Town of Bay Roberts is shown here last week at the new outdoor sports facility. Delaney said it will be in operation for next summer.
