‘Good science is good science’

The Compass - - OPINION -

Dear editor,

I would like to comment on the editorial of Mr. George MacVicar in the July 6 edition of The Compass.

I fully agree with Mr. Macvicar’s sentiments regarding the provincial government’s initiative in the fisheries science research. I think this is a positive step forward for our province. This is a good way for our government to use the province’s non-renewable resource revenue from oil to enhance and support our major renewable resource, the fishery.

I am very pleased, as well, that this will be done under the umbrella of the Marine Institute, which is part of our Memorial University. I feel in years to come that Dr. Rose and his team will produce results that will win provincial, national and international support.

The federal minister of fisheries and oceans, in her response to the initiative, commented that “good science is good science.” I fully agree with her thinking.

Bravo to all concerned. R. David Moores
