Big bucks for Bay Roberts
The excitement in Bay Roberts is reaching fever pitch as a result of the news that it has won the Kraft Celebration Tour competition. The package comes with a grand prize of $25,000, to be used for refreshes to a facility endorsed by the town.
TSN made the official announcement of Bay Roberts’ selection as a finalist on Canada Day.
The competition was open to all Canadian communities. Judges chose 20 finalists from the entries. The rest of the country then decided the 10 winners via an intense 10 days of online voting.
Bay Roberts and Stephenville went head to head in their attempt to win the competition. Voting began at 1:30 p.m. on July 12, and ran for exactly 24 hours.
“Bay Roberts received the most votes ever for a single community in the history of the Kraft Celebration Tour,” according to a news release issued by TSN. This is the third time the competition has been held.
“ We know the breakdown in votes, but we aren’t at liberty to say what it was,” said Ian Flynn, programs director with the town of Bay Roberts.
“It’s quite an exciting time for the town,” Flynn added. “ It’s absolutely amazing how the town banded together in such a short time.”
The $25,000 will go a long way in installing lights on the town’s new soccer pitch/walking track. An estimated $75,000 will be required to complete the installation. The town is hoping to obtain the remainder of the money from the government.
TSN will help Bay Roberts celebrate its win with a live SportsCentre broadcast from the Wilbur Sparkes Recreation Complex. It will start at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20 with a two-hour family fun time, followed by the actual broadcast at 7:30 p.m..
The support from the town and elsewhere has been overwhelming, but not unexpected, added Flynn.
“Ninety-nine per cent of town businesses advertised the event for us,” Flynn said. “Actually, we received great regional support. In other parts of Canada, people were saying to family and friends, ‘Go online and help Bay Roberts by voting for them!’ People really banded together to help us.”
