Local crews turned some heads at the 148th Harbour Grace Regatta on July 31, with Harbour Grace-based teams finishing second in both the men’s and ladies’ championships races.

In the men’s division, Iceberg Rum of Harbour Grace placed second with a time of 11 minutes, 22.66 seconds. It was well back of the winners, Rogers Bussey Lawyers of St. John’s, which crossed the finish line at Lady Lake with a time of 10:45:62. Two other St. John’s teams rounded out the four-crew race.

In the ladies’ final, Eagle Transport of Harbour Grace clocked in at 6:03:41, some 30 seconds back of Lamb’s Rum of St. John’s.

Pond conditions were ideal throughout the day, though the crowd appeared to be rather sparse. One observer commented that he’s been going to the regatta for the past 30 years, and the turnout is about the same every year.

Members of the second place Eagle Transport crew from Harbour Grace include, from left — Cox Fred Chafe, Lisa Penney, Angela Norman, Heather Roach, Kristen Swain, Joan Nippard and Sheena Martin.
