Let there be lights!

The Compass - - NEWS - BY BILL BOWMAN

The new set of traffic lights at the intersection of Columbus Drive, Goff Avenue and Forest Road were set up to flash amber and red all last week to help local motorists become accustomed to the new signals before Monday, Aug. 30, when they were scheduled to get the green light to be fully operational.

Including engineering, land acquisition, intersection realignment, paving and the lights themselves, the project cost approximately $400,000.

Town Administrator Cynthia Davis said the Department of Municipal Affairs costshared the bulk of the project with the Town of Carbonear (80-20), while the Department of Transportation picked up the full tab for the lights themselves.

The town will be responsible for their maintenance. The busy intersection has been the scene of numerous accidents over the past 30 years.
