Call was not a false alarm

The Compass - - NEWS - BY BILL BOWMAN

A Coast Guard Search and Rescue crew based in Long Pond, Conception Bay South were called to the North Side of Conception Bay last Wednesday, Aug. 25.

The crew were called to the area after someone spotted a boat between Carbonear Island and Crocker’s Cove Point with a lot of smoke coming from it.

The cold-water rescue team from the Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade were also on the scene. Although no boat could be found in any kind of distress, Fire Chief Sonya Williams said it was not really a false alarm, as the person who called it in did see the smoke and did identify himself to the RCMP. She said the call was legitimate and they have to respond to such calls because you never know when someone could be in trouble on the water.

When nothing could be found both crews returned to their respective bases.
